#7131 Baltusrol Lower
Course No. 4
Golf historians know well how this hole has
influenced the outcome of more than one major championship contested
on the Lower Course of Baltusrol. Like a book, the 4th (a seemingly
meek 17 handicap on the scorecard) cannot be judged by its cover.
Since 1922, this gorgeous par 3 is straightforward but is guarded
its entire length and breadth by a pond that has swallowed the hopes
of many golfers. An early ruin to a promising score or dashed late
round aspirations in major championships are quite common, as
designer A.W. Tillinghast surely intended.
