St. Andrews No. 18
Surely, there is no more welcoming a home hole as the 18th at The
Old Course, St. Andrews.
Imagine 600 years of golfing history played out before you as you
walk up the final hole at the world's oldest course. St. Andrews is
more than the home of golf, it is the essence of the game.
This scene is marked by two significant elements: the large 18th
green, and the building that is home to the Royal and Ancient Golf
Club.
The 18th features a large putting surface which can be reached by a
prodigious drive. Nearby is the first tee. Except for Swilcan Burn,
the golfer faces little trouble on this hole.
The Clubhouse was constructed in 1854, 20 years after King William
IV conferred his patronage, and his royal title, on what had been
the Society of St. Andrews Golfers, formed in 1754. The Club remains
the ruling body for golf in most areas of the world, the exception
being North America.
The 18th at St. Andrews is far more than a finishing hole. It is a
walk through time, history and tradition.
