Swilken Bridge
There are bridges that are longer, carry more traffic and are
majestic in their construction.
But none are as famed, or have borne the weight of more history,
than the little stone foot bridge that spans the few feet of Swilken
Burn of St. Andrews.
Swilken Bridge was built by unknown masons to allow easy
accommodation across the narrow waterway. There is no mention of the
year built in a history provided by the St. Andrews Links Trust.
The bridge is a favorite stopping point at the end of a round for
golfers desiring their photo to be taken upon the bridge. Indeed,
such stoppage in play has occurred during final rounds of the Open
Championship when players such as Palmer and Nicklaus have closed
their own Open history with a final 18 at The Old Course.
The Swilken Bridge is treasured by golfers worldwide. It has
escorted many to their own date with history and memories, one
golfer at a time.
