Ohio Stadium was completed October, 1922 with capacity listed at
66,210. The final cost approached $1.6 million.

Ohio Stadium Architecture
Designed by architect Howard Dwight Smith, Ohio Stadium is characterized by its great arches and grand
rotunda at the north entrance. Smith's travels to Italy became a
prominent architectural flavor in the project. Ohio Stadium's design
draws direct influence from the Roman Coliseum and the Pantheon,
giving a classic feel to the structure. After all the renovations,
architects were able to combine the old with the new, keeping the
integrity of the original building while adding almost 36,000 seats to
the stadium's original design. |

Birth of The 'Shoe
A preliminary discussion of the idea of a new stadium was under
way soon after the close of the 1916 championship season. Ground was
broken for the Stadium in formal ceremonies August 3, 1921. The
stadium was completed in time for the 1922 football season and opened
with much celebration. The Ohio Stadium was born.

Gold Pants Award
Showing such legendary coaches as
Woody Hayes, Earle Bruce, and Jim Tressel, this print also features
memorable moments in Buckeye football history and the tradition of the
Gold Pants. Introduced in 1934 by Coach Francis Schmidt who said,
"As for Michigan--Well, shucks, I guess you've all discovered they put
their pants on one leg at a time just like everybody else,"
the gold pants charm is awarded to all players who participate in a
win over long-time rival University of Michigan Wolverines.
